- Earlier it was attributed that a container ship ran into engine trouble due to the new LSFO switch.
- The investigation proved that it ran into engine failure and had nothing to do with the new fuel switch.
According to an article published in Ship and Bunker news, a container ship belonging to Maersk ran into an engine failure.
What happened?
It had been attributed that the container ship Maersk Batur ran into an engine failure that was earlier said to have been caused by a switch to new low-sulfur fuels.
The container vessel Maersk Batur experienced problems with its main engine on Wednesday on its way through the Strait of Gibraltar from Algeciras to Newark.
Investigation underway
A spokeswoman for the company told Ship & Bunker, that its crew stopped the engine to prevent any further damage and was towed back to Algeciras. The company is “investigating the root cause of the failure and carrying out necessary repairs, and the problem was not related to the fuel.”
No issues reported
When the rule was implemented, the bunker market has been anticipating issues of engine failures as shipping companies start getting used to the wide range of fuels that come under the VLSFO label.
However, the notion has been proved wrong with few such problems have been reported so far.
