Maersk launched a digital customs clearance platform for seven European countries, which claims to be an industry first, with the goal of expanding the system globally by year end, reports Seatrade Maritime News.

How is the system beneficial?

Every port in every country puts cargo through many different rules, regulations and laws. Aiming to provide simple and easy-to-use solutions, and to streamline the trade processes around container shipping, Maersk has taken customs clearance online.

The aim of the online system is to expedite customs clearance and remove delays which are costly both in time and money.

Initially the system is launched for the seven European countries of Germany, France, Denmark, The Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom and Spain .

Full governance and compliance

“This new one-stop-shop allows us to timely and efficiently handle export and import declarations for our customers. The solution provides downstream benefits of full governance and compliance, eliminates the need to provide a quote as pricing is displayed online, saving three to five minutes per quote,” said Vincent Clerc, cco of AP Moller – Maersk.

The system also reduces the number of intermediaries customers deal with for customs clearance to a single party.

Maersk has been trialing the Ocean and Customs Clearance shipping management platform in Germany for almost two years.

Now fully rolling out the system in seven European countries, including Germany, Maersk aims to implement it worldwide by the end of the year. The system is offer across all Maersk brands.
