Late Saturday, Maersk lines Safmarine Meru reportedly collided with a German ship, Northern Jasper and caught fire off Ningbo, south of Shanghai.  Crews from both the ships were evacuated to safety after the incident.

The Safmarine Meru sustained severe damage from the collision and a fire broke out onboard.  All 22 people on board the vessel abandoned the ship immediately, later the crew of the German vessel too left their ship.

Reports said that Chinese firefighting vessels were tackling the fire and there was no indication that any oil had been spilled as a result of the collision.

“It is too early to comment on the circumstances surrounding the collision and fire.  Our focus now is to put the fire out and get access to the vessel to assess damage to the vessel and cargo,” said Palle Brødsgaard Laursen, Maersk Lines’ head of ship management.
