Danish shipping and logistics giant A.P. Moller – Maersk has officially completed the delivery of the world’s first series of large dual-fuel methanol container vessels with the recent addition of the Axel Maersk.
Green Methanol Propulsion
Maersk has taken delivery of the AXEL MÆRSK, a new dual-fuel methanol container vessel, marking the completion of the world’s first series of large containerships capable of running on green methanol. The vessel is named after Axel Poul Peder Maersk Uggla, a grandson of Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, chair of the A.P. Moller Foundation.
In a social media update, Maersk hailed the delivery: “With the delivery of AXEL MÆRSK, we complete the world’s first series of large dual-fuel methanol container vessels. This iconic fleet is a signal of what’s possible when ambition meets action, All The Way To Zero.” The company emphasized the significance of each vessel in this series, from the Laura Mærsk to the Axel Mærsk, as “a bold step toward a net-zero future.”
The green boxship measures 336.78 meters in length, has a beam of 53.5 meters, and a draught of 18 meters, and flies the flag of Denmark. Classed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the 189,508 dwt Axel Maersk has already commenced its maiden voyage, connecting customers in Asia and Europe along the East–West Network.
This delivery follows the naming of Maersk’s first containership powered by green methanol, the 2,100 TEU Laura Mærsk, in September 2023 by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in Copenhagen. That smaller vessel symbolized a new era for Maersk, positioning the company as a first mover in the shipping industry’s decarbonization efforts.
