Earthquake Details
A powerful earthquake magnitude of 7.1 struck Miyazaki Prefecture and other regions in southwestern Japan on Thursday, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The earthquake, initially recorded as a magnitude 6.9, was later revised to 7.1 by the agency.
Tsunami Advisories
Following the quake, tsunami advisories were issued for the prefectures of Miyazaki, Kochi, Ehime, Oita, and Kagoshima, located on the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. The JMA reported that Miyazaki Port experienced tsunami waves reaching a height of 50 cm.
Impact on Infrastructure
According to Kyodo News, the Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train service was temporarily halted in response to the earthquake. However, inspections of nuclear plants in the affected area revealed no abnormalities.
Seismic Activity
The earthquake, which registered a lower 6 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale of 7, occurred at 16:43 local time. The epicenter was located in the waters of Hyuga-nada, off the southern coast of Kyushu, at a depth of 30 kilometers.
