  • Malta has surpassed 10,000 registered ships, ranking as Europe’s largest and the world’s sixth-largest ship registry.
  • The country holds the top global position in superyacht registration.
  • Starting June 1, Malta will issue electronic ship and yacht certificates to enhance efficiency and competitiveness.

By the end of the first quarter of the year, Malta’s ship registry had exceeded 10,000 vessels, officially making it the largest in Europe and the sixth largest globally, according to the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works. This milestone reinforces Malta’s status as a key player in the international maritime industry, according to Xinhua.

Global Leader in Superyacht Registration

In addition to its robust commercial registry, Malta also claims the top global position in superyacht registrations, further establishing the country as a preferred maritime jurisdiction for both commercial and luxury fleets.

Digital Transition to Enhance Service Efficiency

In a move to modernize and streamline operations, Malta will begin issuing electronic certificates (e-certificates) for all ships and yachts registered under its flag starting June 1. This digital advancement is expected to simplify the registration process and reduce administrative burdens for shipowners.

Commitment to Competitiveness and Transparency

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett emphasized the broader implications of this digital transition, stating that the initiative “will make Malta more competitive in a maritime industry that increasingly demands greater efficiency, transparency, and accessibility.”

Building on Digital Momentum

Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia noted that this development builds on earlier digital efforts, particularly the introduction of e-certificates for seafarers in 2021. Since then, over 93,000 digital documents have been issued, underscoring Malta’s continued commitment to digital transformation in maritime governance.
