MAN Energy Solutions Launches ‘AmmoniaMot 2’ Research Project

MAN Energy Solutions’ earlier AmmoniaMot project focused on fundamental investigations into ammonia combustion in engines, laying the groundwork for this new, ambitious phase. AmmoniaMot 2 will enhance these efforts by developing a dual-fuel test engine specifically for maritime use, aiming to decarbonize the sector with ammonia as a carbon-free fuel.

Alexander Knafl, Head of Engineering R&D Four-Stroke at MAN Energy Solutions, said:

“For us, the path to decarbonizing the maritime industry starts with decarbonizing fuels, and ammonia is an excellent candidate as it avoids CO2 emissions when used as a fuel in our engines.”

Target Applications

The ammonia-powered four-stroke engines are intended primarily for newbuild vessels without passengers, such as cargo ships, and special vessels, or as auxiliary GenSets for large ammonia-powered two-stroke ships. Meanwhile, methanol is being prioritized as the fuel of choice for passenger vessels like ferries and cruise ships.

Christian Kunkel, Head of Combustion Development at MAN Energy Solutions, added:

“In the original project, we demonstrated that ammonia can reduce GHG emissions by 90-95% while meeting existing emissions regulations. Ammonia will play a key role in decarbonizing the maritime sector.”

Roles of Key Project Partners

  • MAN Energy Solutions: Develop the overall engine concept, including the exhaust-gas after-treatment system.
  • WTZ Roßlau gGmbH: Focuses on combustion concepts and injector testing under real conditions.
  • Woodward L’Orange GmbH: Develops the injector prototype.
  • University of Munich (SFM): Leads 3D-CFD combustion simulations.
  • Neptun Ship Design GmbH: Develops a high-pressure fuel-supply module (CAPSAM) for ammonia, ensuring onboard safety.
  • University of Rostock (LKV): Conducts experiments on injection technology, exhaust-gas treatment, and ammonia engine lubrication; develops 0D/1D simulation models.
  • GenSys GmbH: Builds the high-pressure fuel-supply demonstrator module.
  • MNR GmbH: Designs a doublewalled fuel system and compensator for the high-pressure fuel piping.
