- MAN PrimeServ, the after-sales brand of MAN Energy Solutions, has announced a significant step towards decarbonizing the shipping industry.
- The company will offer a retrofit package to convert existing four-stroke engines to dual-fuel methanol operation from 2025.
Initially, the retrofit package will focus on upgrading MAN 48/60 engines to the latest MAN 51/60R-DF-M engine type, which is capable of running on both diesel and methanol. Extensive testing has been conducted at the company’s Augsburg, Germany plant, and the first commercial retrofit is scheduled for autumn 2025.
Benefits for Customers
The methanol retrofit package offers several advantages to customers. By converting to dual-fuel operation, shipowners can reduce emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and future-proof their vessels. Additionally, the retrofitted engines will incorporate advanced control and safety systems.
Economic Viability
MAN PrimeServ emphasizes the economic attractiveness of methanol retrofits. By extending the lifespan of existing engines and reducing operating costs, shipowners can realize significant savings. The company expects strong demand for this solution as the shipping industry continues to prioritize sustainability.
