To meet growing demand, the Manila International Container Terminal is building Berth eight, which will be able to accommodate ultra-large container vessels of up to 18,000 TEUs. This will boost the handling capacity of the terminal by 200,000 TEUs, taking the annual volume capability to 3.5 million TEUs, reports Baird Maritime.
Increased Yard Space and Upgrades in Equipment
Additional yard space will support the new berth and improve yard utilisation, enhancing manoeuvrability. MICT has also deployed eight new zero-emission rubber-tired gantries (RTGs), bringing the fleet’s hybrid equipment ratio to 83%. Plans include acquiring electric trucks and developing an EV charging infrastructure to support ICTSI’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 26% per container move and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Streamlined Gate Operations and Reduced Dwell Time
MICT has enhanced the gate operations with 14 automated lanes and six optical character recognition (OCR) portals. These upgrades have reduced truck dwell time to 47.82 minutes and pre-truck manifesting gate transactions to only 48 seconds.
New Equipment Arrivals to Enhance Terminal Efficiency
The terminal has received new equipment, which has resulted in better terminal operations and efficiency. The new equipment includes 43 terminal trailers, 17 skeletal trailers, and 11 tractors.
Presentation of Digital Solutions with Enhanced Service Quality
Digital innovations have been adapted by MICT, such as the ICTSI App, a tool for tracking and tracing vessels, containers, and trucks in real time. It generates billing computation with electronic interchange receipts. E-wallet payments eliminate the process bottlenecks between import clearance to gate-out, making it possible to expedite the processing thereof.
SMS for Truckers on Arrival and Availability of Free Internet Access
To improve communication, SMS notifications now alert truck drivers about container hold releases and truck instructions upon gate-in. Additionally, free Wi-Fi has been made available within the terminal for truck drivers, further enhancing their experience.
