A recent case in Washington State has raised concerns about accountability and safety in maritime operations. A vessel captain is now subject to a $10,000 arrest warrant after failing to attend a pre-trial hearing related to allegations of operating under the influence while navigating in U.S. waters.
Allegations of Intoxication at Sea
The 48-year-old captain, a Ukrainian national, was detained on August 20 in Seattle after a pilot reported signs of intoxication during a critical maneuver. Court documents reveal that the first officer and pilot took over navigation to ensure safe passage, preventing potential complications.
Authorities conducted field sobriety tests, which were discontinued for safety reasons due to the captain’s poor performance. Breathalyzer results later showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.24 percent, with two additional tests confirming levels of 0.25 percent—well above the legal limit for commercial mariners.
Court Proceedings and Arrest Warrant
On August 25, the captain appeared in court, pleaded not guilty, and requested an interpreter. He was ordered to stay within Washington State, avoid alcohol consumption, and surrender his passport to the authorities. However, when he failed to appear for his pre-trial hearing on August 27, the court issued a $10,000 arrest warrant.
This case highlights the serious consequences of impaired operation in maritime environments, where safety is paramount. With an arrest warrant now in place, the situation underscores the importance of strict adherence to regulations and accountability in ensuring the protection of crew, cargo, and coastal communities.
