Missing Crew After Oil Tanker Capsizes

The 16-strong crew of a Comoros-flagged oil tanker that capsized off Oman is still missing, the country’s maritime security center announced on Tuesday, a day after the sinking was reported. The capsized vessel had a crew of 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans, the Omani center said in a post on the social media platform X.

According to the Omani maritime security center, the vessel remains “submerged, inverted.” However, there has been no confirmation on whether the vessel has stabilized or if there is any oil leakage into the sea.

Details from Shipping Data

Shipping data provided by LSEG indicated that the tanker was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden when it capsized near Oman’s major industrial port of Duqm. The oil tanker is 117-metre long and was built in 2007, typically used for short coastal voyages.

Omani authorities, in coordination with maritime authorities, conducted a search-and-rescue operation at the scene, as reported by Oman’s state news agency late on Monday.

The port of Duqm is situated on Oman’s southwest coast and is close to the sultanate’s significant oil and gas projects, including a major oil refinery. The port is part of Duqm’s vast industrial zone, Oman’s largest single economic project.
