- Industry Pledges Full Support for Decarbonisation by 2050.
- Call for Global Rules to Prevent Costly Patchwork Regulations.
- Governments Urged to Seize Historic Opportunity for Climate Action.
Leading international maritime associations and organisations have reiterated their strong backing for the adoption of the Net-Zero Framework by world governments during the upcoming Extraordinary Session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) scheduled for 14–17 October, reports World Shipping Council.
Commitment to Decarbonisation
The global shipping industry is fully dedicated to working alongside IMO Member States to roll out this balanced regulatory package aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by around 2050. This framework includes strategies to reduce risks associated with investments in green marine fuels, speed up the decarbonisation process, and ensure a fair transition for the maritime workforce.
Importance of Global Rules
Industry leaders stressed that only global regulations can truly decarbonise a worldwide industry. Without the IMO’s cohesive framework, the shipping sector risks being bogged down by a confusing mix of unilateral rules, which could drive up costs without making a real impact on emissions.
Historic Opportunity for Governments
The associations called on governments to take advantage of this historic chance to create a comprehensive, globally enforced regulatory system that encourages the sector’s shift to net-zero emissions while ensuring fair competition across the globe.
Industry Ready for Sustainable Future
Representing a sector that handles 90% of global trade, the maritime industry has declared its readiness to play a vital role in fostering a sustainable and decarbonised future.
