One approach to decarbonising maritime shipping is to develop plug-in or battery-swappable hybrid ships. This involves equipping ships with batteries that can be recharged or replaced, allowing for increased battery range as technology improves over the vessel’s lifespan. Additionally, the ships can utilize biofuels, which would be converted into electricity through a generator, gradually reducing the reliance on traditional fuels while minimizing carbon emissions.

What Is Preventing Shipping Concerns From Sailing Through The Deep & Wide Channel Of Hybridization?

The individual has been involved in a series of activities related to decarbonization efforts in various sectors. They participated in a maritime decarbonization debate in Glasgow, assisted a European green infrastructure investment management firm with their investment strategies for industrial decarbonization and grid storage, helped an Argentinian energy venture capital firm with their biofuels investment strategies, and are preparing for an executive learning session in Beijing on decarbonization pathways.

The person emphasizes the importance of writing and publishing their thoughts as a means of refining their thinking and inviting expert review. They value the process of learning and correcting their mistakes to improve their understanding. They prioritize being accurate and informed rather than protecting their ego or appearing infallible.

Currently, they plan to write about their strategic pathway for decarbonizing maritime shipping, building on their previous publications and experiences in the field. They believe there is an emerging strategy that holds promise in addressing the decarbonization challenges in the shipping industry.

Repowering maritime industry

The individual had an engaging conversation with Elisabet Liljeblad, PhD, who is the Sustainability & Energy Lead at Stena Teknik. Liljeblad had invited the individual to the Glasgow event, and in return, they invited her to be a guest on their podcast, “Redefining Energy – Tech.” They highlight Liljeblad’s impressive background, which includes serving in the Swedish military in Afghanistan, obtaining a PhD in electro physics, and working with organizations like NASA, ESA, and Volvo.

During their conversation, they discussed the different options available for repowering the maritime industry. While the individual has previously mentioned that batteries and biodiesel will likely be part of the solution, they recognize that this is only the mix of technologies and fuels and not the overall strategic pathway for decarbonization. They intend to explore and share their thoughts on the strategic pathway for decarbonizing maritime shipping in upcoming podcast episodes.
