Marlink Expands its Smart Hybrid Network Solutions
Marlink, a leading smart network and digital solutions company, has recently inked a significant contract to extend its innovative smart hybrid network solutions in collaboration with Starlink LEO internet service to Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line), a prominent Japanese shipowner. NYK Line, based in Tokyo, has been a valued Marlink customer since 2013, benefitting from Marlink’s hybrid network services that cater to a diverse fleet, including containerships, bulk carriers, tankers, car carriers, LNG/LPG carriers, and specialized cargoships.
The Successful Assessment of Starlink Paves the Way
In 2022, NYK Line initiated a successful assessment of Starlink on two of its vessels, which ultimately led to a comprehensive contract with Marlink. The agreement entails Marlink’s integration and management of Starlink’s LEO services as an integral part of NYK Line’s smart hybrid network. This integration will soon be rolled out across NYK Line’s entire fleet.
Prioritizing Crew Communications and Welfare
NYK Line’s strategic approach involves utilizing Starlink’s service in conjunction with the existing high-capacity VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) provided by Marlink, with a specific focus on enhancing crew communications and welfare services. Marlink’s VSAT will continue to serve as the primary channel for business communications, with L-band backup available when needed.

To ensure uninterrupted connectivity and high-quality service for both business and crew applications, Marlink has integrated its XChange platform into the network management onboard NYK Line vessels.
