- Marlow Expands Commitment to Seafarer Wellbeing with ISWAN Partnership.
In the beginning of 2025, Marlow Navigation launched an exclusive emotional support service in collaboration with the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) to provide ongoing support to its seafarers, reports ISWAN.
About Marlow Navigation
Established in 1982 as a tiny family company, Marlow Navigation has developed into a worldwide respected leader in third-party ship and crew management services, maritime training, and offshore industry support. The firm has more than 1,100 vessels under its management with over 16,000 seafarers on board at any one time. Marlow attributes its success to its family-focused values and hardworking staff both ashore and at sea.
New Emotional Support Service
Seeing the need to offer emotional and mental health assistance to its crew, Marlow collaborated with ISWAN to provide a multilingual 24/7 seafarers’ helpline. The service is confidential and seeks to provide a safe environment where seafarers can discuss any issue, no matter how big or small. ISWAN helpline officers, who are trained to deal with a variety of issues, offer emotional support to seafarers and their families, including support for those at risk of injury or suicidal.
ISWAN’s Role and Confidential Support
The helpline will be managed by the same group that runs ISWAN’s established SeafarerHelp helpline, which is Helplines Standard-accredited. Anonymized information will be reported to Marlow by ISWAN so it can better understand the mental health issues affecting its seafarers and put in place preventative actions where necessary.
Marlow’s Commitment to Seafarer Wellbeing
Joern Clodius, Marlow’s Training Director, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting its seafarers: “We trust this lifeline will significantly benefit our seafarers and their families. If even one person gains valuable assistance from this initiative, it will be a success. The anonymized feedback we receive will also help us take necessary pre-emptive measures to improve wellbeing.”
Marlow’s Ongoing Support of ISWAN
Besides opening this helpline service, Marlow also supported ISWAN’s 2024 seminar in India in the past and is now a full member of ISWAN’s network. The collaboration further demonstrates Marlow’s dedication to serving seafarers and their families, pursuing cooperative possibilities, and participating in ISWAN’s research and activities.
