The International Maritime Organization (IMO), in collaboration with the World Maritime University (WMU), has launched a new e-learning course focused on MARPOL Annex V, which regulates the prevention of pollution by garbage from ships. Announced during the 75th session of the IMO Technical Cooperation Committee, the course aims to address the growing concern over marine litter, especially plastic waste. It is designed to support maritime professionals and authorities in understanding and complying with MARPOL Annex V, reinforcing global efforts to reduce ship-sourced pollution and protect marine ecosystems.
New E-Learning Course Improves Global Understanding of MARPOL Annex V
WMU President, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia Jr., encouraged maritime professionals to embrace the new MARPOL Annex V course as a way to deepen their knowledge of pollution prevention and support a more sustainable maritime industry. Aimed at a wide range of users—including government officials, maritime educators, seafarers, and port reception facility operators—the course offers a structured overview of MARPOL Annex V’s key provisions.
Participants will learn about the scope of the convention, disposal restrictions, compliance responsibilities for shipowners and crew, and the environmental impacts of marine waste. It also covers enforcement mechanisms and best practices for managing ship-generated litter.
The course was developed under the IMO Ocean Litter Programme, with WMU contributing to its structure and content. It adopts a self-paced, learner-focused format with animated modules and practical exercises designed to meet the evolving training needs of the maritime community.
By promoting awareness and improving sector-wide competence, the initiative supports global efforts to reduce marine pollution from ships and helps meet the targets of UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. The course is free to access through the IMO E-learning portal and is currently offered in English, with French and Spanish versions planned.
