Marubeni Corporation has entered into a strategic partnership with Norwegian shipping company Solvang ASA to jointly operate the ammonia carrier “MV Clipper Neptun.” Solvang is a major player in the ammonia transportation industry, holding a 10% share of global ammonia shipments and boasting extensive expertise in seaborne ammonia logistics.
This partnership aligns with Marubeni’s long-term climate change vision, formulated in March 2021, which emphasizes a green strategy as a core component of its Mid-Term Management Strategy, GC2024. Marubeni has been a pioneer in establishing a low-carbon ammonia supply chain, playing a key role in Japan’s energy security and decarbonization efforts. By entering the ammonia transportation sector through this collaboration with Solvang, Marubeni aims to support the global supply of ammonia, a critical clean energy source.
A Milestone in Ammonia Transport
The “MV Clipper Neptun” is a specialized ammonia carrier that will facilitate the transportation of ammonia worldwide, contributing to the increasing demand for low-carbon energy solutions. As ammonia is expected to become a key player in clean energy transitions, the operation of such vessels is essential for ensuring its stable supply.
Rising Demand for Ammonia in Japan
The Japanese government has set ambitious targets for increasing domestic demand for low-carbon ammonia, with projections of three million tons by 2030 and 30 million tons by 2050. Additionally, Japan aims to develop a domestic and international ammonia supply chain, targeting a total volume of 100 million tons of ammonia transportation by 2050. This anticipated growth in seaborne ammonia transportation underscores the importance of partnerships like Marubeni and Solvang’s, as they contribute to the country’s long-term energy goals.
Building a Global Ammonia Value Chain
Through this project, Marubeni will further develop its expertise in ammonia transportation, positioning itself as a key contributor to the establishment of a global low-carbon ammonia value chain. This partnership with Solvang is part of Marubeni’s broader strategy to support global climate change mitigation efforts, ensuring the availability of clean energy solutions for the future.
