The U.S. government is moving ahead with a new workforce training initiative aimed at reviving domestic shipbuilding through the “MASGA” (Make American Shipbuilding Great Again) project. This effort, tied to recent South Korea-U.S. tariff negotiations, includes the establishment of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding and Marine Industry Technology Cooperation Center, with dedicated funding outlined in next year’s budget, according to ChosunBiz.

As part of the MASGA framework, South Korea committed to a significant investment package in the United States, which helped reduce reciprocal tariffs from 25% to 15%. Central to this cooperation is the newly created Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding and Marine Industry Technology Cooperation Center, designed to support Korean companies entering the U.S. market and to meet shipbuilding-related workforce demands.

Within its 6.64 billion won budget, 3.45 billion won has been earmarked for the Masters Academy, a program providing hands-on training in shipbuilding disciplines such as welding and ship design. The academy is expected to graduate its first 100 trainees next year, supported by leading firms like HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering. Additional funds will be used for running the cooperation center and fostering local partnerships, underscoring the joint commitment to strengthening shipbuilding capacity in the United States.
