As the Bible reads, two by two, the animals entered Noah’s Ark, and Thursday in northern Kentucky, humans followed suit. The $100 million ark replica follows the same measurements of “300 cubits,” as indicated in the Bible, standing seven stories tall and stretching one-and-a-half football fields long.
The Ark Encounter is based on the biblical story of Noah, which states that God told Noah he was going to flood the earth, and if Noah built the ark, God would send a pair of animals from each species.
“If you build it, they will come” is the same principal The Ark Encounter is following, hoping for two million visitors from all around the world each year, creating hundreds of jobs and an economic boom for the small town of 4,000 residents.
The ark is full of exhibits, sound effects, and rows of cages featuring multiple pairs of animal models, including dinosaurs.
Though scientists believe dinosaurs last roamed the earth 65 million years ago, the group who created the ark, Answers in Genesis, believes that our planet is just 6,000 years old, and that dinosaurs still lived in Noah’s days.
Outside the massive structure, the Ark Encounter hosts a small live animal zoo.
Part of the ark was funded from tens of millions of dollars in tax incentives and bonds from the city of Williamstown, raising concerns from critics over the separation of church and state, and creating a legal battle that the ark creators won in court.
The biggest difference between the replica and Noah’s actual ark is that this boat won’t float.
