Antwerp-Bruges witnessed a remarkable surge in LNG bunker supply in the past year, although still trailing behind Rotterdam’s volumes, reports Engine.

Breakdown of LNG Fuel Sales in Antwerp-Bruges

In the transition from 2022 to 2023

  • Antwerp-Bruges sales soared from 3,400 mt to 31,000 mt
  • Antwerp sales escalated from 1,200 mt to 9,300 mt
  • Zeebrugge sales surged from 2,200 mt to 22,000 mt

Significant Growth in Total LNG Bunker Sales

Total LNG bunker sales in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges skyrocketed by 808% in 2023, fueled by robust performance in the second and third quarters.

Historical Perspective

Antwerp provided LNG sales data dating back to Q2 2021, while Zeebrugge’s records trace as far back as 2016. The combined LNG sales in Antwerp-Bruges reached an all-time high in 2023.

Antwerp’s Remarkable Growth

Antwerp experienced a more than sixfold increase in LNG sales in 2023, with sales rising in every quarter. The second quarter saw peak sales of 3,000 mt, while the fourth quarter witnessed a moderate 3% rise compared to 2022.

Zeebrugge’s Striking Performance

Zeebrugge saw over seven times more LNG sales in 2023 compared to 2022, with all quarters in 2024 surpassing the 2,000 mt mark. The third quarter of 2023 marked the highest sales quarter of the year.

Rotterdam’s Dominance

Despite the remarkable growth in Antwerp-Bruges, Rotterdam remains the leading port for LNG bunkering, with sales reaching 251,000 mt in 2023, eight times higher than Antwerp-Bruges. Rotterdam’s sales also doubled that of Singapore, which recorded 111,000 mt.
