The masts of a sunken cargo ship carrying 1,400 tonnes of explosives are set to be removed in 2022 reports EssexLive.
About the sunken ship
The SS Richard Montgomery sank and split in two off the coast of Sheerness in August 1944 with tonnes of explosives on board.

For more than 70 years, it has remained submerged off the Kent coast, opposite Southend-on-Sea, with the potentially devastating explosive capability.
Part of the wreck still contains 2,000 cases of “used and non-fused fragmentation cluster bombs” and 208 tonnes of bombs containing TNT.

If all the explosives on board ignited, it’s thought areas like Canvey Island and Southend would be heavily affected – with the blast radius predicted to be one of the largest single explosions ever witnessed on the British Isles.
Salvage and Marine Operations
Last May, the Salvage and Marine Operations (Salmo) Team at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) asked companies to tender for the job of removing the SS Richard Montgomery’s ship’s masts on the behalf of the Department for Transport (DfT).
Contract for safe removal confirmed
The DfT has now confirmed that a contract will soon be awarded for the safe removal of the masts in 2022, following a successful competitive procedure.
The masts removal however does not indicate or signal the removal of any ordinance on the ship – with the sole priority focused on removing the ship’s masts.
In order to safely and successfully remove the masts, market analysis is also underway to determine whether a separate contractor would be required to carry out any “further work”.
DfT stressed that no decision had been made whether to proceed with any competitive procedure.
Holes in the ship
A historic report by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in 2000 showed that there are holes in the ship which are big enough to allow the explosives to escape.
The site is believed to be constantly monitored by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and is well sign-posted to ensure no ships disturb the sunken danger.
