Saudi Arabia is pushing forward with its plan to modernize and expand its logistics sector, as the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) signed privatization contracts for multipurpose cargo terminals at eight key ports across the country. Structured under a 20-year Build-Operate-Transfer model, the agreements were made in partnership with the National Center for Privatization, attracting private investments totaling over SAR 2.2 billion, according to a report by Container News.
Major Operators Take Charge of Terminal Development Across Key Saudi Ports
The newly signed contracts have been awarded to two prominent national logistics firms—Saudi Global Ports and Red Sea Gateway Terminal Company—tasked with developing, managing, and operating multipurpose terminals in both the Eastern and Western Provinces. According to Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of Mawani, these initiatives, aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, aim to strengthen maritime connectivity, improve operational efficiency, and support economic diversification.
Saudi Global Ports will operate terminals at four ports in the Eastern Province: King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, Jubail Commercial Port, King Fahd Industrial Port in Jubail, and Ras Al-Khair Port. Meanwhile, Red Sea Gateway Terminal will oversee terminal operations at key ports in the Western Province, including Jeddah Islamic Port, Yanbu Commercial Port, King Fahd Industrial Port in Yanbu, and Jazan Port.
Planned investments at ports such as King Fahd Industrial Port in Yanbu will support the deployment of modern equipment including STS and gantry cranes, reach stackers, trucks, and trailers. These enhancements are expected to increase container handling capacity, reduce truck turnaround times, and shorten vessel berthing durations, contributing to overall improvements in terminal productivity.
