Mechanical Failure Causes Container Ship Collision at Barranquilla Port

6

A container ship collided with the dock at Barranquilla Port, Colombia, on October 3 due to a mechanical failure that caused the vessel to go adrift. The incident occurred early in the morning, around 4:00 AM, when the ship lost control and struck the port infrastructure, reports Marine Traffic.

Mechanical Failure

Weighing 22,914 gross tons and built in 2007, the vessel was carrying 2,700 tons of cargo at the time of the collision. Fortunately, no pollution or injuries to the crew were reported, but the ship sustained significant damage, including a punctured hull and damage to the ballast tanks. Authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage to decide if the ship needs to be dry-docked for repairs or if it can continue to the next port.

The mechanical failure has raised concerns about the ship’s condition, and further inspections will be required to determine the appropriate course of action. The port infrastructure is also being examined for damage. This incident highlights the potential risks involved in large-scale maritime operations when mechanical issues arise.
