Al Seer Marine and BGN have confirmed the delivery of Merak, a very large gas carrier (VLGC) equipped with ammonia-carrying capability. With a capacity of 86,423 cubic metres, the vessel was handed over on August 14 by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in South Korea through their joint venture, ABGC. The acquisition, financed via a syndicated loan facility led by the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, marks a key milestone in the companies’ fleet expansion. The Merak has already commenced her maiden voyage to the US Gulf to load her first propane and butane cargo.
Upcoming Deliveries
The joint venture continues to strengthen its presence in the global gas carrier market, with two additional ships under construction. A VLGC from Hyundai Samho is scheduled for delivery in November 2025, while an LPG/ammonia carrier being built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan is expected in October 2025. These deliveries will further expand the venture’s dual-fuel fleet.
Strategic Growth Vision
Guy Neivens, CEO of Al Seer Marine, noted that the company’s strategy is focused on diversifying both fleet and cargo capabilities to align with evolving market requirements. Echoing this view, Rüya Bayegan, CEO of BGN, highlighted that the Merak adds to the company’s expanding fleet of dual-fuel gas carriers, strengthening its commitment to sustainable and adaptable shipping solutions.
