Global energy and commodity group Mercuria, along with maritime innovator ÈTA Shipping, have announced a groundbreaking partnership to promote sustainable short-sea shipping, reports PR Newswire.

The collaboration will involve the construction of six initial vessels (with an option for ten more) designed for maximum efficiency. The vessels will be owned by Mare Balticum BV, a subsidiary of Mercuria, with ÈTA Shipping as a minority shareholder. The first ship is expected to set sail in the second quarter of 2025.

Increasing efficiency and enhancing safety

ÈTA Shipping was founded with the goal of revolutionizing the design and operation of cargo ships to improve efficiency. The flagship vessel, ÈTA 6700, features a modular design that eliminates the need for a main engine. Instead, it is powered by an electric motor, with electricity supplied by generators fueled by conventional or low carbon fuels. The vessel can also accommodate sustainable power sources such as batteries or fuel-cell technology. It can achieve a speed of 10.5 knots fully laden with under 900 KW of power, making it the most efficient Ice 1A vessel in its peer group.

Automation plays a significant role in increasing efficiency and enhancing safety in comparison to traditional vessels. The ÈTA 6700 utilizes a 3D management tool with over 1,300 sensors, allowing for virtual navigation, data access, and trend analysis. The vessel can be safely operated with a reduced crew size of four, instead of six.

Greener and efficient shipping

Mercuria’s investment in ÈTA Shipping and the development of the ÈTA 6700 series align with their commitment to zero carbon shipping and energy transition. The vessels are designed with efficiency, futureproofing, and automation in mind. They are already 30% more efficient than conventional newbuilds and 50% more efficient than the average ship in the existing fleet.

The partnership between Mercuria and ÈTA Shipping aims to lead the way in greener and more efficient shipping. They plan to expand the fleet and make a lasting impact on the maritime industry. The construction of the vessels will be undertaken by Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering Co., Ltd, selected for their flexible and innovative approach. Through this collaboration, ÈTA Shipping’s innovative vessel design will become a reality, contributing to sustainable short-sea shipping.
