In the third quarter of 2024, global shipowners placed orders for 193 ships capable of running on LNG or methanol, according to data from the classification society DNV, reports PortNews.
Significant LNG Vessel Orders in July and August
July and August saw a busy period of LNG orders, with 53 new vessels ordered in July and 55 in August. It marked a strong uptick in LNG-powered ship demand.
Of the LNG-capable vessels ordered, 86 ships came from the container segment. The car carrier segment also experienced growth with 13 orders.
Methanol Vessel Orders Primarily in the Container Sector
A total of 49 new orders for methanol-powered ships were registered in Q3, with 39 of these coming from the container segment. It demonstrated continued interest in methanol as an alternative fuel.
Kristian Hammer was a senior consultant at DNV. He noted that following the strong activity in July and August, September saw a more modest rise in vessel orders.
