Methanol Orders Advance Multi-Fuel Future

Recently, MAN Energy Solutions has announced an increase in orders for the MAN B&W G95ME-LGIM Mk 10.5 methanol engines that are expected to fuel a new class of VLCVs. To date, since the engine made its market debut in 2021, orders are cumulatively at 95 units and are being manufactured in South Korea, China, and Japan. As of today, five units are already operating on VLCVs, reports MAN Energy Solutions.

Same Proven Design as Predecessors

The new engines are similar in core design to the already proven 50-bore LGIM models of which more than 25 are currently in active service. This continuity in design will thus ensure reliability and maintain high performance associated with the LGIM series.

The Path to a Multi-Fuel Future

Bjarne Foldager – Country Manager, Denmark – MAN Energy Solutions, said: “The marine industry is heading for a multi-fuel future where several pathways need to be available in order to achieve sufficient greenhouse-gas reduction at scale. Along with methane and ammonia, methanol is one of the low- and zero-carbon fuels that will underpin shipping’s quest for decarbonisation. We ultimately expect methanol to figure prominently as a future fuel across all vessel segments.”

Rising Interest in Dual-Fuel Methanol Engines

Peter Quaade, Head of Dual-Fuel Engine Group, Two-Stroke Engine Support, MAN Energy Solutions said: “Interest in methanol is taking off for new buildings and retrofits. Our dual-fuel methanol concept is proven and, to date, has accumulated over half a million hours running on methanol alone. Simultaneously, the interest in methanol retrofits is also growing. Indeed, the world’s first methanol engine retrofit – a G95ME-LGIM type – is currently undergoing sea trials in China, which we anticipate will increase interest in this approach to decarbonisation.” 

MAN B&W ME-LGIM Engine

MAN B&W ME-LGIM (-Liquid Gas Injection Methanol) engine is a dual-fuel variant running on both methanol and conventional fuels. This engine is based on the well-established ME-series that has more than 8,500 units in operation. It runs on the Diesel principle, and with the use of green methanol, it allows for carbon-neutral propulsion for large marine vessels. In fact, more than 210 ME-LGIM engines have been ordered and delivered for service, symbolizing a great trend toward maritime sustainable energy solutions.
