- Mexican-Flagged Vessel Went North Instead of South Before Crash.
A Mexican-flagged cargo ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge after it mistakenly turned in New York Harbour waters, the U.S. Coast Guard announced in an initial report. The vessels, MSC Michigan VII, inflicted slight damage on the famous bridge, but there were no reported injuries. Investigators are now probing what went wrong in the navigation and whether any regulations were violated, reports USA Today.
Ship Made a Wrong Turn
The cargo ship was supposed to go southbound but made an unplanned turn. “The vessel was supposed to head southbound but instead went northbound,” said Coast Guard spokesperson John K. Allen. “That’s when the allision with the Brooklyn Bridge occurred.”
Minor Damage, No Injuries
The accident occurred early Thursday morning. Though the bridge was hit from underneath, only minor damage was discovered during inspections. There were no hazardous materials aboard the ship when the accident occurred.
Bridge Remains Open
After inspection by the New York City Department of Transportation, the bridge was deemed safe. All traffic lanes for vehicles and pedestrians remain open.
Authorities are still investigating what caused the vessel’s navigational mistake and if safety protocols were adhered to. “This is part of a broader effort to understand how such incidents happen and how we can prevent them in the future,” Allen added.
