German shipbuilder Meyer Werft recently marked a significant milestone with the keel-laying ceremony for Disney Cruise Line’s third liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled cruise ship, Disney Destiny. This event signifies another step forward in the partnership between Meyer Werft and Disney Cruise Line, showcasing advancements in environmentally sustainable marine technology.

Keel-Laying Ceremony Details

The keel-laying ceremony for Disney Destiny took place at Meyer Werft’s yard on March 20, with Philip Gennotte from Walt Disney Imagineering Germany placing a coin under the keel—a longstanding maritime tradition. The shipyard lowered the keel block onto the bracing and the coin, marking the commencement of construction. The keel block measures 38.9 meters wide, 14 meters long, and 6.3 meters high, symbolizing the beginning of the ship’s assembly process.

Features and Specifications

Disney Destiny, the third vessel in the Wish class, will boast approximately 1,250 cabins and a size of around 144,000 gross tons (GT). Scheduled for delivery in 2025, the ship will incorporate Disney storytelling elements and uphold Meyer Werft’s renowned quality standards. Like its predecessors, Disney Destiny will feature a low-emission LNG propulsion system, aligning with Disney Cruise Line’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable maritime practices.

Continued Collaboration and Future Outlook

The keel-laying ceremony for Disney Destiny underscores the ongoing collaboration between Meyer Werft and Disney Cruise Line in advancing LNG-powered cruise ship technology. With the conversion of the Disney Adventure cruise ship also underway, Meyer Werft remains dedicated to supporting Disney Cruise Line’s fleet modernization efforts. The completion of Disney Destiny reaffirms both companies’ commitment to innovation and sustainability in the cruise industry, setting a precedent for future environmentally friendly vessel designs and constructions.
