Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) is deploying the AIRIS (Artificial Intelligence Retraining In Space) satellite system to address the growing global threat of “dark ships” — vessels that disable their Automatic Identification System (AIS) to evade detection. AIRIS combines artificial intelligence with space technology to enhance real-time monitoring of suspicious maritime activities.
Real-Time Detection and Processing in Orbit
Unlike traditional satellites that rely on ground-based processing, AIRIS performs AI-enabled data processing onboard, allowing it to identify and track dark ships in real-time. The system transmits only relevant information, reducing response times and improving monitoring accuracy. By adapting AI models from Earth, AIRIS can stay updated on new evasion tactics.
Economic and Security Impact
With illegal fishing and other covert maritime activities costing the global economy billions, AIRIS is a significant step toward reducing economic losses and enhancing global security. Set to launch in 2025 onboard JAXA’s RAISE-4 satellite, AIRIS also has potential applications beyond maritime surveillance, extending to track other elusive objects globally.
