Ship Management International highlighting the significant financial impact of preventable container cargo claims in the maritime industry. It explores common causes and practical solutions to reduce these costly incidents.
Year after year, container ship operators face staggering losses running into many millions of dollars—much of it entirely preventable. This is the message from Capt. Girish Munjal, Chief Visualiser and Content Director for MarinePALS, who says these recurring incidents are draining the industry’s bottom line.
Common Causes of Cargo Claims
According to Capt. Munjal, the maritime industry continues to experience significant financial losses due to preventable cargo claims. These recurring incidents are primarily attributed to three main factors:
- Refrigerated Container Cargo Claims: Damage to refrigerated containers, often due to improper temperature control or equipment failure, accounts for nearly 30% of container-related claims.
- Containers Lost Overboard: Between 2020 and 2022, an average of more than 2,300 containers were lost overboard each year, leading to substantial financial losses.
- Incidents Involving Dangerous Goods: While less frequent, incidents involving dangerous goods have resulted in some of the most catastrophic losses in maritime history.
These issues often stem from basic errors such as missed pre-loading checks, failure to follow securing manuals, improper segregation, worn-out lashing gear, or a lack of awareness of early warning signs. Despite the existence of regulations and procedures, their effectiveness depends on seafarers’ understanding and application, especially under operational pressure.
Addressing the Gap Between Knowledge and Practice
To bridge the gap between knowing and doing, MarinePALS has released five focused microlearning videos targeting these high-risk areas:
- IMDG Cargo on Container Ships (two parts)
- Preventing Container Loss Overboard (two parts)
- Preventing Claims for Refrigerated Container Cargo
Each video draws on real incident learnings, P&I circulars, company SOPs, and regulatory requirements, delivered in short, engaging formats designed for onboard use. Capt. Munjal emphasizes that MarinePALS isn’t just offering content; it’s delivering practical, real-world solutions that speak directly to those responsible on board. This approach helps companies reduce losses, raise crew competence, and close the costly gap between knowing and doing—one microlearning at a time.
