Missile Strike Near Yemen’s Mocha: Maritime Security Alert

202

British maritime security firm Ambrey reported a missile attack on a Malta-flagged container ship near Yemen’s Mocha. The vessel reported three explosions towards its port quarter, prompting communication with a coalition warship

Details of the Attack

Ambrey revealed that three missiles were fired from Yemen’s Taiz Governorate. A nearby vessel observed a small boat, approximately 50 meters in length, within 1 mile of the incident. The attack appears linked to Houthi militants’ increased assaults on commercial vessels in the Red Sea in protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Possible Motivation

While the targeted vessel was not Israel-affiliated, Ambrey suggested that its operator’s other vessels’ regular calls to Israel might have made it a target. In response to such attacks, some shipping lines have suspended operations in the Red Sea, opting for longer routes around Africa.

Houthi Threats and Geopolitical Context

The Houthi militants, controlling significant parts of Yemen, including Sanaa, have vowed to continue attacks until Israel halts the conflict in Gaza. They have also warned of targeting U.S. warships if the militia group itself faces retaliation. The situation raises concerns about maritime security in the region.
