Mitsubishi Onboard Scrubber Retrofits Reach 22 This Year

  • Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, says its DIA-SOx marine scrubbers have been installed on 22 ships during the last eight months.
  • The builder said the installations were completed as scheduled despite the continued spread of COVID-19 globally through remote commissioning.
  • Rectangular tower R Series have been installed on container ships and cylindrical tower C Series on large oil tankers and LPG carriers.
  • Installation works have been conducted in China and Singapore, and approved by classification societies after sea trials.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s marine sulphur oxides (SOx) scrubbers have been successfully installed on 22 ships across three ship types during the last 8 months, reports the company website.

Sulphur oxides scrubbers

The DIA-SOx scrubbers have been installed as scheduled despite COVID-19 restrictions. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding is part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group.

Remote commissioning conducted via close communication and cooperation with the engineers of its local partners in China and Singapore respectively enabled Mitsubishi Shipbuilding to continue with the planned installations.

The line-up of DIA-SOx consists of the R Series and C Series.

  • The rectangular tower design of the R Series is the most suitable for container ships and its multi-stream configuration can simultaneously with 1 tower treat exhaust gas discharged from multiple engines, including the large main engine. The simplified configuration enables ship crews to easily conduct maintenance work.
  • The C Series with cylindrical tower design also utilises the multi-stream configuration, offering high flexibility that can be easily installed onboard various types of the ships.

Retrofit engineering services

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding also provides retrofit engineering for installation of both types of scrubbers.

For 14,000 TEU container ships for which Mitsubishi Shipbuilding provided engineering services as well as the scrubber retrofit, the scrubber tower was installed in the built-in casings on the port side of the existing funnel.

The scrubber system was installed without reducing container loading capacity, which is one of the advantages of the rectangular tower shape of the R Series.

Following sea trials, the scrubber retrofits were approved by ClassNK, Lloyd’s Register (LR), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and other classification societies.
