Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Progresses Decarbonization with New LNG-Powered VLCC

  • MOL is ordering a new LNG-fueled VLCC, the first dual-fuel VLCC chartered to a Japanese oil company, with delivery planned for 2027.
  • The vessel supports MOL’s environmental vision to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050 by expanding its LNG-fueled fleet, which currently includes about 40 vessels.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), led by President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto, has announced the order of a new LNG-fueled very large crude carrier (VLCC) to be chartered long-term by Idemitsu Tanker Co., Ltd., marking the first dual-fuel VLCC to be chartered to a Japanese oil company. The vessel will be built by Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (DACKS) in China, a joint venture between Kawasaki Heavy Industries and China COSCO Shipping Corporation, with delivery scheduled for 2027.

Advancing Decarbonization with LNG-Fueled Vessels

MOL has established the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” targeting net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. LNG fuel offers a 25%-30% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional fuel oil, making it a key part of MOL’s strategy for sustainable decarbonization in shipping. 

The company is actively adopting LNG as a low-carbon fuel, aiming to operate 90 LNG- and methanol-fueled vessels by 2030. Currently, MOL’s fleet includes about 40 LNG-fueled vessels (as of March 2025), six of which are VLCCs including the newly ordered vessel. Through the long-term time charter contract with Idemitsu Tanker, MOL intends to lead the wider adoption of LNG fuels and contribute to lowering the shipping industry’s environmental impact.

The vessel has a deadweight tonnage of about 309,000 tons, a length overall (LOA) of approximately 339.50 meters, a breadth of about 60.0 meters, and is scheduled for delivery in 2027.
