  • MOL secures ClassNK Approval in Principle (AiP) for a large ammonia-powered ammonia carrier.
  • Designed with a larger cargo capacity, the vessel meets the safety and operational needs of Japan’s power sector.
  • Supports MOL’s net-zero goal by 2050, advancing clean energy transportation.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), in collaboration with Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., has been developing a large-size ammonia-powered ammonia carrier since 2021. The vessel has now secured Approval in Principle (AiP) from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for its ammonia-fuel-compatible design.

The ship is designed to address the growing demand for ammonia as a zero-carbon fuel and hydrogen carrier, particularly for power plant fuel transitions. Compared to conventional VLGCs (Very Large Gas Carriers) and VLACs (Very Large Ammonia Carriers), this vessel features increased cargo capacity and lower emissions, while maintaining compatibility with existing power plant infrastructure and ammonia supply terminals in Japan.

Safety and Regulatory Compliance

The vessel’s basic design underwent a hazard identification study (HAZID), where experts evaluated safety risks, with a particular focus on ammonia toxicity. Countermeasures have been incorporated to ensure safe operations, allowing the project to proceed with detailed design completion.

The Approval in Principle (AiP) signifies that the basic design meets regulatory safety and feasibility standards, ensuring a smooth transition to final development. ClassNK’s review confirmed that the vessel aligns with current maritime safety regulations and operational requirements.

Commitment to Decarbonization

MOL Group is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 and continues to promote sustainable shipping solutions under BLUE ACTION 2035 and MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2. This ammonia-powered carrier represents a significant step toward realizing a decarbonized, low-carbon society, supporting the global transition to clean energy transportation.
