MODEC, Inc. (MODEC) in cooperation with Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO), has developed a new ammonia floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit design, which incorporates onboard carbon capture technology for the production of blue ammonia. The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to the design, following reviews based on class and statutory requirements, reports ABS.

Blue Ammonia and Its Potential

Blue ammonia is produced using a low-carbon method, where hydrogen, which is a byproduct of captured and stored carbon dioxide, is combined with nitrogen. This new process is promising to be an alternative in reducing offshore emissions.

ABS Endorsement and Industry Impact

Miguel Hernandez, ABS Senior Vice President, of Global Offshore, highlighted the significance of this development: “Blue ammonia has significant potential to lower the emissions of offshore operations. ABS is able to harness its extensive experience offshore alongside its global leadership in the classification of FPSOs to support the development of this potentially game-changing technology.”

MODEC’s Vision for Alternative Energy

Koichi Matsumiya, Executive Officer and Group CTO of MODEC Inc., emphasized the challenges and future direction: “Through this development, we have explored how we can leverage our expertise in producing low-GHG ammonia, a potential alternative energy source to oil and gas in the global energy mix. However, this development has also made us aware of the significant challenges that need to be tackled to commercialize the concept.”

He further added: “MODEC views this AIP as the first step in developing floating solutions for alternative energy production. We will continue to strive to refine and mature this concept, pursuing a safe and affordable alternative energy supply solution. This is part of our commitment to society to explore a sustainable future with innovation.”

TOYO’s Commitment to Sustainable Energy

TOYO President and CEO Eiji Hosoi underscored the company’s expertise and commitment to sustainability: “We are proud to announce that TOYO, with its extensive expertise and a global track record of 87 ammonia projects, has successfully obtained AIP from ABS for the ammonia FPSO jointly developed with MODEC. The innovative design of the ammonia FPSO enables offshore production of blue ammonia, a low-environmental impact fuel that is expected to contribute significantly to mitigating global warming. By advancing the efficient use of resources and supporting the transition to a decarbonized society, we remain committed to driving sustainable energy solutions for the future.”

ABS Role in Offshore Classification

ABS is the classification provider for most of the world’s FPSOs, both conversions and new builds. As a leading authority in offshore asset classification, ABS plays a critical role in supporting the energy industry’s transition toward sustainable solutions.
