- MOL and Fujitsu launch AI-powered optimization system for crew replacement planning.
- Trial phase begins in Japan in May 2025, aiming for full-scale implementation.
- The AI system automates scheduling, reducing planning time by approximately 70%.
- Key features include balancing onboard and vacation periods, accommodating personal life events, and meeting operational needs.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Fujitsu Limited have announced the launch of an AI-powered optimization system for crew replacement planning. The new system, developed by Fujitsu AI consultants, is set to enter trial operations in Japan by May 2025, aiming to streamline scheduling and improve seafarer work-life balance.
Addressing the Challenges of Crew Planning
Traditionally, MOL’s crew planning personnel manually extracted scheduling data from separately managed databases—a process that was time-consuming and complex. Crew assignments had to consider multiple factors, including:
- Seafarer rank and qualifications
- Onboard and vacation periods
- Ship type and schedules
This manual approach often resulted in prolonged scheduling adjustments, making it difficult to balance crew assignments effectively.
AI-Driven Optimization for Smarter Assignments
The new AI-powered system leverages mathematical optimization techniques to automate and improve scheduling. It focuses on three key areas:
- Meeting Customer Needs – Ensures crew assignments align with specific operational and client requirements.
- Balancing Onboard and Vacation Periods – Distributes work and rest schedules more evenly across the year.
- Considering Personal Life Events – Enables crew members to take leave for significant life events, such as weddings or childbirth.
By implementing this system, crew planning efficiency is expected to improve by approximately 70%, reducing administrative burdens while enhancing scheduling accuracy.
Enhancing Seafarer Work-Life Balance
One of the key benefits of the AI-driven system is its positive impact on seafarers’ well-being. By shortening consecutive onboard periods and ensuring adequate rest time, the system promotes a healthier work-life balance—a critical factor in crew retention and job satisfaction.
Aligning with MOL’s Human Capital Strategy
This initiative is part of MOL’s HC Action 1.0 plan, which emphasizes:
- Career development for both land- and sea-based employees
- A fulfilling and supportive work environment
- Flexible work-life integration
Fujitsu, as a key technology partner, will continue to support MOL’s digital transformation initiatives, leveraging AI and digital technologies to enhance operational efficiency and address industry challenges.
