Innovative Collaboration for a Cleaner Marine Environment

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. have embarked on a groundbreaking collaboration to conduct a demonstration test on the recycling of marine plastic waste. This initiative aims to address environmental challenges and promote marine environment conservation through innovative solutions.

Harnessing Technology

MOL Group’s subsidiary, Nihon Tug-Boat Co., Ltd., has taken a significant step by installing an automated marine debris collection device known as “Seabin” at the Hiroshima Municipal Pier. This technology will play a pivotal role in collecting marine plastic waste and forms the cornerstone of this joint effort.

From Waste to Resource

In this demonstration test, Idemitsu Kosan’s subsidiary, Chemical Recycle Japan Co., Ltd., will utilize the marine plastic waste collected by Seabin as raw material. Leveraging their expertise in recycling used plastics into oil, they aim to produce oil, exploring its potential as a key ingredient for petrochemical products and fuel oils.

Towards Sustainable Futures

Both MOL and Idemitsu Kosan are deeply committed to environmental sustainability. As part of their broader sustainability strategies, they view this initiative as a critical step in reducing the impact of various activities on the global environment. By addressing climate change, protecting biodiversity, and contributing to the well-being of people and the planet, they aspire to pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future.
