MOL and Tokyo LNG Tanker Partner on Wind-Assisted LNG Carrier

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced an agreement with Tokyo LNG Tanker Co., Ltd. (TLT), a subsidiary of Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., to equip a newbuild LNG carrier with two of MOL’s and Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.’s jointly developed Wind Challenger wind-assisted ship propulsion systems. The LNG carrier will operate under a long-term charter for TLT, reports MOL.

Wind Energy Propulsion

This latest installation marks the world’s second Wind Challenger system to be fitted onto an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carrier. It’s worth noting that two bulk carriers have already been delivered equipped with this technology, and an additional seven vessels are scheduled to receive the Wind Challenger system (as per Note 2, which is not provided in the text but likely refers to a prior point of information).

A key feature of the Wind Challenger is its telescopic sail. This design allows the sail to be extended to capture wind energy for propulsion and retracted when not needed, such as during maneuvering in port or under bridges. This functionality directly contributes to reducing the vessel’s fuel consumption and consequently lowering its greenhouse gas emissions.

As the world’s largest owner of LNG carriers, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) is reiterating its strong commitment to fostering a decarbonized society. The company aims to proactively reduce the environmental impact associated with the ocean transport of LNG, thereby addressing the growing global demand for this energy source through innovative and sustainable approaches. The adoption of the Wind Challenger technology on its LNG carriers is a significant step in this direction.
