MOL Expands Fleet With Five New LNG Bulkers

271

  • Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) is expanding its fleet with five new LNG-capable Capesize bulkers, aiming for a total of 13 such vessels by 2027.
  • With targets aligned for net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, MOL emphasizes LNG’s potential to significantly reduce CO2, SOx, and NOx emissions compared to conventional marine fuels.
  • This move aligns with MOL’s broader strategy of increasing LNG-fueled vessels across various shipping categories to curtail greenhouse gas emissions.

Fleet Expansion

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) is expanding its fleet with five dual-fueled Capesize bulkers that can burn LNG or conventional marine fuel oil.

These vessels, slated for delivery between 2026 and 2027, will bring MOL’s total LNG-capable Capesize bulkers to 13, with one vessel already operational since March 2023 receiving LNG fuel.

Emission Reduction

LNG, compared to traditional marine fuel, boasts significant emission reductions: 25% in CO2, complete elimination of SOx, and around 85% in NOx.

Aligning with its vision for net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, MOL has expanded its LNG-powered fleet across various vessel types, including car carriers, tankers, and ferries.

As an immediate step, MOL aims to further increase LNG-fueled vessels to expedite its drive towards slashing overall GHG emissions.
