Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), led by President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto and based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, has exciting news! They’ve announced that the Future Low-emission Ammonia Marine Engine Project, spearheaded by Carnot Ltd. (with President Archie Watts-Farmer at the helm and headquartered in the UK), is joining forces with MOL’s subsidiary, MOL (Europe Africa) Ltd. This project has been chosen for the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 6 (CMDC6). CMDC6 is part of a broader initiative from the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE), which is on a mission to position the UK as a frontrunner in clean maritime technology, reports MOL.

Carnot’s Consortium

At the heart of this project is a consortium led by Carnot, where MOL has made a significant investment. Carnot is working on innovative engine technology that minimises energy loss during cooling and significantly boosts both thermal and fuel efficiency by utilising advanced heat-resistant materials.

MOL (Europe Africa) Ltd. is collaborating with a range of UK-based companies and academic institutions, including De Courcy Alexander Ltd., Houlder Ltd., Clean Air Power GT Ltd., and the University of Southampton. The goal is to create an ammonia auxiliary engine retrofit solution that helps shipping companies cut down on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and lower their operating costs.

Focusing on Technical Development

The project will zero in on optimising ammonia technology, with the University of Southampton providing cutting-edge combustion simulations and Clean Air Power GT Ltd. working on a high-flow ammonia injector. Houlder Ltd. will lend its technical expertise to integrate the ammonia auxiliary engine into existing systems.

Meanwhile, De Courcy Alexander Ltd. will play a crucial role in assessing market potential, competitive dynamics, risks, and strategies to speed up adoption. MOL (Europe Africa) Ltd. will share its operational insights, fleet management know-how, and strategic guidance on implementing this technology and exploring future fuels. MOL’s involvement will be vital in crafting a phased strategy for practical deployment.

Sustainability Commitment and BLUE ACTION 2035

MOL has placed sustainability at the heart of its BLUE ACTION 2035 management plan, which seeks sustainable growth while addressing environmental and social challenges.
Through participating in the Project with Carnot, MOL stated it aims to contribute to GHG reductions in the maritime sector.
