MOL Launches World’s First Ammonia-Fueled Bulkers & Tankers

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and its subsidiary, MOL Chemical Tankers Pte. Ltd. (MOLCT), have partnered with Belgium-based CMB. TECH NV will jointly own and charter nine ammonia-fueled vessels, significantly advancing sustainable maritime transport, reads an official release.

Vessel Details

  • Ammonia Dual-Fuel Capesize Bulk Carriers: Three vessels, scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2027 from CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.​
  • Ammonia Dual-Fuel Chemical Tankers: Two vessels, expected between 2028 and 2029 from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) Dingheng Co., Ltd.​
  • Ammonia-Ready Chemical Tankers: Four vessels designed for future conversion to ammonia fuel.​

Ammonia is gaining global attention as a next-generation clean energy source. The MOL Group’s adoption of ammonia aligns with its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. ​ This initiative underscores MOL’s commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation in maritime technology.
