MOL PLUS, the corporate venture capital arm of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), has announced a third round of investment in Kyoto-based Metro Weather, a developer of Doppler LiDAR systems for advanced wind measurement. The renewed backing reflects MOL’s confidence in the technology’s potential across shipping, logistics, and other industrial sectors.

Advancing Compact 3D Wind Measurement Technology

Founded in 2015, Metro Weather specializes in atmospheric observation devices, meteorological data services, and IoT solutions for weather monitoring. Its latest innovation uses Doppler LiDAR to capture real-time, three-dimensional wind data, enabling precise visualization of gusts and turbulence. The company is also exploring LiDAR-based object detection, expanding the potential applications of its technology.

Strategic Fit with MOL Group’s Operations

MOL PLUS views advanced wind measurement as a key enabler for operational safety and efficiency in shipping and logistics. By supporting Metro Weather’s growth, MOL aims to integrate real-time wind prediction into maritime operations, port logistics, and other group activities. The technology’s ability to enhance situational awareness could also serve broader use cases beyond maritime, contributing to safer and more sustainable transport solutions.

The third investment from MOL PLUS underscores the strategic value MOL sees in Metro Weather’s Doppler LiDAR innovations. With applications ranging from maritime safety to multimodal logistics, the partnership positions both companies to drive adoption of advanced wind measurement technology across global transport and industrial sectors.
