Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has achieved a significant milestone in the maritime industry by securing Approval in Principle (AiP) for an LNG carrier equipped with a Wind Challenger sail propulsion system. This innovative design, developed in collaboration with Hanwha Ocean, marks a world-first for the LNG carrier sector.

Features of the Design

The LNG carrier, with a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, will be fitted with two Wind Challenger sails. Extensive safety assessments, including those conducted by Gaztransport et Technigaz, have confirmed the structural integrity of the vessel and its compliance with safety standards.

Commitment to Sustainability

This achievement aligns with MOL’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company plans to deploy 25 vessels equipped with Wind Challenger by 2030 and 80 by 2035. This demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable shipping and reducing the industry’s carbon footprint.
