On May 16, 2025, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) held its inaugural online event for women seafarers to commemorate the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Day for Women in Maritime, observed annually on May 18.

MOL’s dedication to fostering an inclusive maritime industry

The event brought together 70 participants, including 31 women crewmembers and cadets, as well as Captain Naomi Matsushita, Japan’s first female captain of an intermodal ocean shipping group company. Through talk sessions with MOL Group’s ship management companies, manning companies, and newly appointed Welfare Officers, attendees discussed their motivations for becoming seafarers and shared personal experiences. The sessions aimed to deepen understanding of the challenges faced by women in maritime professions and to promote a supportive work environment.

MOL highlighted its initiatives to enhance onboard living conditions for women, such as pre-boarding briefings, mental health support, and the provision of sanitary products. These efforts align with MOL’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as outlined in its Human Capital Vision. The company has been recognized as a “Nadeshiko Brand” for five consecutive years and has been included in the MSCI Japan Equity Women’s Activity Index (WIN) for two years running.

This event underscores MOL’s dedication to fostering an inclusive maritime industry and supporting the advancement of women seafarers.
