MOL, Sinopec Zhoushan and Marubeni Partner to Build Stable Marine Biodiesel Fuel

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sinopec Zhejiang Zhoushan Petroleum and Marubeni to develop a long-term, stable supply system for marine biodiesel fuel in China. The collaboration aims to strengthen availability, infrastructure and adoption of low-carbon fuels in the shipping sector, supporting immediate emissions reduction.

Building a Stable Biodiesel Supply Chain in China

Under the MoU, the three companies will work together to create a reliable and scalable supply network for marine biodiesel. MOL will take the lead in promoting biodiesel usage across the Chinese maritime market, while Sinopec Zhejiang Zhoushan Petroleum and Marubeni will focus on securing fuel supply and building essential infrastructure.
This includes developing storage facilities, transportation systems, and supply ports needed to support smooth distribution. The goal is to position biodiesel as a viable drop-in replacement for conventional heavy fuel oil, compatible with existing engines and offering immediate CO₂ reduction benefits.

Supporting Decarbonisation Through Recycled Biomass Fuels

The initiative focuses on biodiesel derived from recycled biomass, which carries lower lifecycle carbon emissions compared to traditional marine fuels. The partners highlight that this fuel does not require engine modifications, making it a practical and quickly deployable solution for ship operators seeking near-term emissions cuts.
Each company brings unique expertise: MOL in global shipping operations, Sinopec Zhoushan in China’s coastal fuel-supply network, and Marubeni in logistics and low-carbon energy project development. Together, they aim to accelerate the shift toward cleaner marine energy across one of the world’s busiest shipping regions.

The partnership between MOL, Sinopec Zhoushan and Marubeni marks a significant step in expanding biodiesel availability within China’s maritime sector. By combining operational expertise, supply capability and infrastructure development, the trio aims to create a dependable alternative fuel pathway that supports both regional and global decarbonisation goals. As biodiesel becomes more accessible, it could play a crucial role in enabling the shipping industry to reduce emissions without waiting for long-term technological transitions.
