MOL Unveils BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE to Revolutionize Green Shipping

  • MOL launches the BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE to offer low-emission marine transport services.
  • EACs (Environmental Attribute Certificates) enable customers to reduce Scope 3 emissions through flexible trading.
  • Proceeds from EAC sales will fund alternative fuel procurement, accelerating decarbonization efforts.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has taken a significant step toward achieving net-zero emissions with the launch of the BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE. This program aims to reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions for shippers and Non-Vessel Operating Common Carriers (NVOCCs) by providing low-emission marine transport services using alternative fuels, reports MOL.

Leveraging EACs for Sustainable Marine Transport

The core of this program lies in the trading of EACs, which represent the environmental benefits of low-emission voyages operated by MOL’s fleet.

These certificates allow shippers and NVOCCs to quantify and report Scope 3 emission reductions in their sustainability reports.

By utilizing a book-and-claim model, EACs offer flexible trading, meaning companies can purchase environmental attributes without a direct link to specific voyages.

Funding Alternative Fuels Through EAC Sales

MOL has structured the program so that the proceeds from EAC sales directly fund the procurement of alternative fuels.

By gradually replacing fossil fuels with cleaner alternatives, the initiative ensures continuous investment in sustainable shipping solutions. This aligns with MOL’s long-term goal of building a clean marine fuel supply chain to support the transition to net-zero emissions.

Expanding Collaboration with Key Industry Players

MOL’s success in executing EAC transactions with major NVOCCs—including Nippon Express Holdings, C.H. Robinson Worldwide, and MOL Logistics—has laid the foundation for the program’s launch.

By deepening stakeholder engagement and encouraging widespread adoption, MOL aims to scale up its low-emission marine transportation services to meet the evolving needs of global shipping partners.

Aligning with MOL Group’s Environmental Strategy

The BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE is a key initiative under MOL’s Environmental Vision 2.2, which prioritizes business models that enable net-zero emissions.

Additionally, MOL’s corporate management plan, BLUE ACTION 2035, outlines a strategic investment roadmap to develop clean fuel supply chains and optimize fleet operations. The program reflects MOL’s commitment to sustainability-driven innovation in the maritime sector.
