- MOL Targets Greener Shipping with Launch of Energia Viking.
- MOL Aims for Net Zero by 2050 with LNG Fleet Expansion.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), led by President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto, recently announced that its subsidiary, MOL Energia Pte. Ltd., managed by Miki Ogura and based in Singapore, held a naming ceremony for its latest very large crude carrier (VLCC), the Energia Viking, reports MOL.
MOL Group’s First LNG Dual-Fuel VLCC
The ceremony took place at Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (DACKS), and this impressive vessel is set to be delivered under a charter agreement with Equinor ASA, a prominent international energy firm based in Stavanger, Norway.
The Energia Viking marks a significant milestone as MOL Group’s inaugural LNG dual-fuel VLCC, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices. With an LNG fuel tank capacity of over 10,000m³, this vessel is designed for long-distance and flexible transport.
Enhanced Crew Comfort with “IKOI” Space
To enhance the living experience for its crew, MOL has introduced “IKOI,” a dedicated relaxation area that separates work from leisure. This is the first time “IKOI” has been featured on an MOL-operated VLCC, highlighting the company’s focus on crew welfare.
Commitment to Decarbonization and LNG Adoption
MOL has set ambitious environmental targets as part of its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The use of LNG fuel, which can cut GHG emissions by 25%-30% compared to conventional fuel oil, is a key element of this strategy.
The company plans to have 90 LNG/methanol-fueled vessels in operation by 2030. Currently, around 40 LNG-fueled vessels, including the Energia Viking, are in the works. Six VLCCs are expected to be delivered starting in 2025, with three of them, including the Energia Viking, set to operate under charter with Equinor.
Partnership with Equinor for Cleaner Shipping
Through its partnership with Equinor, MOL is at the forefront of the industry in adopting LNG fuel and minimising the environmental footprint of VLCC operations. This collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to promoting sustainable maritime transport.
