- Hanaria, Japan’s first passenger ship powered by hydrogen and biodiesel, wins the 2024 “Ship of the Year” award from JASNAOE.
- Developed by MOL Techno-Trade, the vessel features three power sources—hydrogen fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, and a biodiesel generator—for flexible, eco-friendly navigation.
- This recognition marks MOL Group’s eighth Ship of the Year award, reinforcing its Environmental Vision 2.2 goals for net zero GHG emissions by 2050.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) announced that its innovative hybrid passenger ship Hanaria has received the prestigious “Ship of the Year 2024” award from the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE). Developed by MOL Group subsidiary MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. (President & CEO: Masao Fukushima), Hanaria stood out for its technical, environmental, and social impact.
Vessel Innovation and Environmental Leadership
Hanaria is powered by a hybrid system that includes hydrogen fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, and a biodiesel generator. This unique combination enables zero-emission sailing when powered by hydrogen and battery systems, and the vessel was commended for its ability to flexibly switch between its three propulsion sources.
Environmental Commitment and Past Achievements
This marks the eighth time an MOL-operated vessel has received the honor and the first in two years. In 2023, the coal carrier Shofu Maru, equipped with a Wind Challenger sail, and Japan’s first LNG-fueled ferry Sunflower Kurenai, were recognized by the same award panel (Note 2).
Vision for a Sustainable Future
MOL has committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire Group by 2050 as part of its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.” The company is actively pursuing sustainable shipping solutions through wind propulsion, clean alternative fuels, and group-wide collaboration.
Leveraging its scale and maritime expertise, MOL aims to transform into a global social infrastructure company—one that not only provides essential marine transport services but also supports modern living and contributes to a more sustainable future through innovation and stakeholder value.
