Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that its plan for a large-scale dry bulk vessel equipped with a hard sail system has been certified by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).

Wind Challenger Project

The vessel plan has been developed as part of the Wind Challenger Project, which aims to ‘harness wind as a propulsive force for merchant ships’.

According to MOL: ‘The additional propulsion power from the wind can reduce vessel’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 5% to 8% compared to conventional ships of the same class.’

MOL added that the plan is to install a hard sail on a large bulk carrier that is currently under construction at Oshima Shipbuilding and slated for delivery in October 2022 after sea trials.
